Writing Guidelines

With over 400,000 monthly views and 30,000 email subscribers, the Ultimate Horse Site is a popular source for horse information on the web. Do you want to submit your work to be published on The Ultimate Horse Site? Email your article or story to: ultimatehorse@gmail.com

Please note that not all submissions are published. We review each article or story and make the final decision on whether or not to publish. Below are some tips to help you when considering submitting to us:

Types Of Writing We Accept
As a general information site, we accept articles on just about every horse subject. If your article is well-written, researched, and informative, chances are we'll be glad to publish it. Articles written for the web (easy to read, not wordy, informative) are preferred, as well as well-written horse stories.

Our Readership
We have 400,000 monthly views to our website. We also have a newsletter with 30,000 subscribers. This is an excellent opportunity to get free exposure to the horse world.

Quality Of Articles
The higher quality a story or article is, the better. Think of the reader; does your article present something other horse people would want to read? Articles can be based on personal experiences, research, or a combination of both. Make sure your article has a variety of sources, is accurate, and well-written.

Republished or original?
Please let us know if your article has been published before online or in print. We will sometimes republish articles that have been published online, but we prefer to use articles that have not been published online.

Horse Stories
We are only accepting nonfiction stories. If you can, include photos to illustrate your story. If you are submitting a story written by someone under the age of 18, please note it. We sometimes publish children's stories but please make sure they are checked for grammar and spelling before submitted.

Length
Use your judgment as far as how long your article should be. We do not have a length requirement, however articles are generally not accepted if less than 400 words. If your article is very long, consider breaking it down into different sections for readability, or perhaps into different articles, as long as the readability doesn't suffer.

Cite all sources you use
Please cite all sources you use in your writings. Personal stories or articles based on experience may be written with no sources, but if you're researching an article include credit to all sources you use. You may attach a "Works Cited" paragraph at the end of your article; that is encouraged. Plagiarism is not tolerated.

Compensation For Articles
We do not generally pay for articles. Many writers submit articles in exchange for free exposure on our site. If you are a horse business owner, trainer, etc. this may be the option for you. If your article has been published online, or contains commercial links, we may still accept it, but we will only offer a link back & credit in exchange for the article.

If you wish to have your article considered for publication in exchange for payment, you must let us know at the time you submit it; tell us what rights you are willing to sell and we will let you know if we are interested. We will only purchase the exclusive rights to use the article online and will not purchase articles previously published online. We prefer articles designed for the internet, which is a different style than articles designed for print. The pricing for exclusive internet rights on original articles depends on quality, length, etc.

Writing for the internet

Writing for the internet is different than print. When people search online, they typically want information quickly; dislike scrolling extensively; avoid excessive wordiness. Breaking up the writing into small chunks helps prevent eyestrain. There are plenty of articles about writing for the web out there; print articles can be reformatted fairly easily if needed. Articles that are unique, concise, or are handy to the horseowner are what we're looking for.
Examples of popular online articles: The Perfect Horse - Don't Eat Your Poop! - Bit Metal Types - Horse Hands Converter - Tying Safety

Concise articles are better, but keep in mind that some of our best articles are well-detailed because they are about such unique subjects. For example, see the Hairless Horse page.

The best pages are what readers will enjoy; easy to read, informative source that people will want to link to, or so unique that the online forums will be buzzing.

Photos or diagrams:
We love it for you to include photos or illustrations with your work. Please include any relevant information with images, such as descriptions; if you get permission to use another person's photos, credit them. Simple .gif or .jpg images are perfect for the internet. We do not need print quality as those images are too large to be displayed online. We will resize your images if needed.

Author Bio & Links
Please include a short paragraph about you, the author. If you have a website, include the address so we can link to your site.
