Looking for rescued horse "Little Doc"...
< - Back to "Letters from Readers"

I remember a little horse named Little Doc, or Li'l Doc.

Some of what I know about Li'l Doc...he was rescued from the knackers
in San Antonio, TX by Sarge, the head groom at the Fort Sam Houston
Boots & Saddles Club.

When he got strong enough, the grooms at B&S discovered that they could
not keep him in a paddock. He was, as the old saying goes, a "jumpin'
fool"!

I think he was sold to the American Pentathlon team; and I VERY clearly
remember attending a horse show where the enormous jump he had
cleared in competition was set up outside the coliseum in San Antonio, TX.

I think I was about 10 at the time, so 1968?

Obviously his was not a world record, but my memory is that is WAS a
record, so...an Olympic record?

So...here are my questions:

Do you have any more info on Li'l Doc?

How high WAS that jump?

Where did he set that record?

Who was riding?

Thank you for your time, I hope that these questions intrigue you as much
as they have frustrated me!

I don't know what breed he was . . .
Oh! Almost forgot . . . after he "got famous", it was discovered that he had
been stolen from a breeder in Mexico when he was very young . . . which made
his rescue and all the rest very romantic for a 10-year-old horse-mad introvert
like me!
