Both "Charger" (a cavalry horse) and "Courser"
(a swift horse or charger) are words for war horses. "Destrier"
is an archaic term for 'war horse', from Latin dexter, meaning
right, as Destriers were lead on the right side until they were
needed for battle or tournament. The "Palfrey", or light-riding
horse, was used during marches, or as a lady's riding horse (it
too is an archaic term).
Some other related war-horse words:
"Chamfrain", also spelled "Chamfron" or "champfrain",
was armor for the horse's face. "Caparisons” or “Bards"
were cloth, leather, or mail cloaks that the horses wore for protection,
or just as ornaments. A “crinet” guarded the horse's
neck, and “flanchards” protected its flanks. A "Capel"
is a medieval farming horse.
