Splint Boots
Splint boots are front leg coverings designed to support and protect a horse's legs. These boots are essential for horses competing in stressful events such as barrel racing, show jumping, cross country jumping, etc. Splint boots support the
horse's tendons and protect the horse's splint bone. They also protect
the horse's legs from outside debri or from being struck by a hind
leg. Splint boots are a must for the equine athlete. Without proper
protection horses may injure their legs by popping a splint, being
hit by a rock or other debri or by striking their own front leg
with a rear leg. However, splint boots are optional for the average
trail horse and they are not used on certain types of show horses
so that the judges can clearly see the horse's legs. Before using
splint boots it is important to understand how to put them on properly.
Improper use can cause tendon damage. Splint boots should be put
on so that the straps are on the outside of the horse's leg and
the tendon is being pulled to the inside. If you have never used
splint boots before, you should have someone show you how to properly
put them on.
