Smoky Black

This horse could be mistaken for a regular black, but his slightly off-black coat and "yellow" eyes help identify him as a Smoky black. However, appearance alone is often not enough to distinguish a smoky black; this stallion is a proven smoky because he sired a dilute foal out of a non-dilute mare.

A smoky black foal, sire is a double dilute. Look at those ears! Some smoky black foals will have lighter hair in the ears like this. This foal also has light eyes, another dilute characteristic.

This is a photo of a now-mature mare who has produced palominos and buckskins when bred to chestnuts-- proof that she carries the cream gene. Her sire was a palomino, and her dam a black.
