Jake
by Tara Wright

My 18 Year old Quarter horse has done some funny things, stupid things,
but overall very wise things. Jake was a rescue case, he was starved and mistreated. He shows us the gratitude he has for saving him everyday. One day in particular he showed that he is more than a horse but a savior to myself.

One winter evening I went to the barn, I did everything I always did. I gave him treats, groomed him and put his bridle on to have a quick ride bareback. Jake is always a good boy. He never does anything wrong, almost bombproof. So I was walking him in the indoor ring. and then I picked up a trot.

Nothing seemed to be wrong, but for some reason Jake was a little tense. I thought nothing of it and kept trotting. So I picked up a canter and as I was cantering I felt different. I suddenly got a headache, and slowly began getting very dizzy. Out of nowhere Jake stopped. He refuses to go on.

I fought for him to pick up the canter but he refusesd. Suddenly I lost my normal vison. At first I could not really see. Then evertything turned into double vision. At this time I blacked out! All the time my loving companion just stood there not moving while I was still on his back. I woke up still seeing double and went to find somone. Then I was off to the hospital! I was treated and was orderd to stay in the hospital for three days.

Jake was a savior that day. He could of kept cantering and I would have gotten seriously hurt. But he wisely chose to refuse my order and make up his own mind, something he has ever done before. I truly believe that he felt something go wrong. And he knew he had to act on it. I was his savior now how he is mine.
